Floods are devastating forces of nature. Australia can testify to that. Queensland's floods covers the area that is bigger than Germany and France combined, with Central to South East Queensland being the worst affected. My friends had been telling me that it had been raining throughout December and flooding in Australia, but I guess, none of us expected it to be so close to home. Effects were devastating, where homes, businesses and facilities submerged/flooded/wipe out. Looking at photos and videos of the flood in Brisbane was very disheartening for me and my fellow universities friends, since WE had been there not too long ago, some are still studying there. Some of the places we stayed/frequented or even passed or went before were submerged or flooded to a very high level. St Lucia was partly gone, especially those near the river, which where most of us stayed. The university grounds were not spared either, so was South Bank and Riverside. The river had expanded and increased in height, so much so it was hard to tell which was the actual river and which was ground. Cars, pontoons, boats etc were also swept away by the strong currents. Friends still in Brisbane described the aftermath of the floods as a warzone, which were pretty scary. But i do admire the aussies for their "sporting" spirit, even in times of crisis. Everyone helped each other in the clean up, the government were quick in rescue/evacuation/prevention/support etc. They really lived up to their "take things easy" attitude; many of them took photos, videos, or just simply watched the river over the bridges as they were all stranded, simply enjoying themselves, making the best they can with the situation at hand. Some even went the extra mile to rescue the stranded wildlife, as a man in Toowoomba did - he risked his life in the flood waters to save a wallaby/kangaroo. Furthermore, there were no reports of looting unlike their American counterparts such as New Orleans. In times of trouble, they opened their house to friends who were evacuated, neighbours helping neighbours in the cleanup, everybody doing their part.

it's the start of the new year.. ok, maybe not the 1st day, but 2nd day comes close right? besides, most places/things starts tomorrow, namely school and work.. bummer.. it had been an eventful 2010, where i came back from australia for good; family experienced a health scare (dad); officially learnt a new skill (kayaking); joined the work force (well in a way i did, although i am under training); went for a few holidays and short getaways with families and friends, had my 1st official self financed trip (hong kong); attended a few weddings (my 1st wedding of a friend, where i actually gave an ang pow... and of course my cousin's shot gun wedding..) and a funeral (Dr Ng Kok Cheng, may he rest in peace), funny thing how weddings and funerals always bring people together.. personally, i would rather all meet at a wedding (happy occasion) then at a funeral (sad occasion); involved in a minor car accident; and most importantly, i met new people!! although i lost a friend over the most ridiculous thing but hey, that's life... lost a friend and gained at least 4 more to join our clique.. hey, i dont really mind that... i say it is a good "investment"? it's a "profit".. of course the new people includes my colleagues and ros's new friends from her trekking group, whom i have joined them for their most relax activities - "chalet" and camp over the weekend...
all in all.. i say 2010 had been a good and blessed year for me and i thank God for that... in fact, the whole decade had been good.. 2000 - 2010, had witness 3-4 phases of my life: the start of my seconadry school life where i met more good friends to share my tears, laughters, joys and craps with; JC where i picked up hockey and my 1st official experience being in a mix school.. also where i met sara (whom together with lixian we will spy on cute guys and who introduced us to facebook just so we can take a look of "chair" her one time crush since we were miles apart... (she being in canada while we are in singapore); poly - the start of my tertiary years... where i have to start paying adult fares.. also a place where i do crazy things.. hey you are only young once; and of course.. my university life in australia.. i wouldn't change it for the world.. true that i did not get into the choice course i wanted in poly and i failed a semester in uni.. but i believed God knows what is good for me.. i did not regret being in DCP.. chemistry was afterall my best science subject.. and with my failed semester, i managed to start honours in the beginning of the year, got the supervisor i wanted, met more people (namely the newman society people) who i definitely would not get to know them better... so yah.. the years are good..
so cheers to the new decade (i must thank matthew buckley for that.. being in a new decade) and on a short term... the new year of 2011..
may all have a good health and blessed year ahead!!! =D
